Powelectrics IoT technology is helping RSPB Lodmoor provide ideal habitat for Weymouth Waders

Powelectrics is delighted to be working with The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), helping in its valuable work to protect birds and the wider environment. Founded in 1889, it is now largest wildlife conservation charity in Europe, working predominantly in the UK, but also with partners across the globe.

The RSPB maintains over 200 nature reserves, covering a range of habitats, from estuaries and mudflats to forests, marshes, heathland, cliffs and even town centres! RSPB reserves are vital havens for a huge range of species and Powelectrics is proud that our remote monitoring solutions are being used as part of this exceptional conservation effort.

The RSPB has used Powelectrics’ award-winning Metron telemetry to remotely monitor water levels at a number of reserves. Readings are taken automatically, at user-defined intervals, by solar-powered, weatherproof Metron telemetry devices. Data is reported via the mobile phone network to Powelectrics MetronView cloud. Data and alerts are available to unlimited users on any web-enabled device.

By connecting sensors to the cloud, local experts can maintain sensitive wildlife habitats by opening sluices to achieve optimum water levels. This ensures that protected species have access to the best nesting environments and food.

RSPB Lodmoor is a 76-hectare reserve in Weymouth, Dorset. Its a Site of Special Scientific Interest, with a large reedbed, open water, saltmarsh, wet grassland and bushes, which attract a variety of different birds, including bearded tits and Cetti’s warblers, gulls, ducks, kingfishers and winter waders.

Hollymay Gladwin, Assistant Warden, RSPB Dorset, Weymouth Reserves, “Over time our freshwater reedbed became mature and required management. The Metron telemetry is helping manage the water levels so that we can remove old reeds and recreate the edge habitat preferred by key species, such as bittern and marsh harriers.

“Powelectrics telemetry allows us to monitor the water levels remotely, reducing the need to disturb the natural environment. Hourly readings and alerts allow us to respond quickly to changing water levels. It is not good practice for an individual to navigate wetland alone. For safety, we’d normally send a team of two to check levels, so this kit saves a lot of time and means we can deploy our human resource in other areas.

“The unit is solar-powered and completely independent. The fact it can monitor four sensors means we are now considering using the same kit for salinity monitoring to enrich the regular and historical data that we are acquiring.”

Powelectrics Metron4 supports 2G & 4G for global deployment! It offers 4 analogue inputs, expansion cards for pulse counting & RS232  and options to develop RS485 & CANBUS interfaces. With solar, battery & external power options, IP67 enclosure & operational temperatures – 25 to +65°C, its able to deliver sensor data & alerts into many global applications!

MetronView offers customisable dashboards and reports, but also offers a common API, so that data may be drawn into other platforms for application-specific processing. These can be developed by Powelectrics or by our customers.

Powelectrics act as a connection between the world of sensors and the Internet of Things. We offer 30 years’ experience in sensors, remote monitoring and connectivity. The company’s ’connected sensor’ solutions are employed in many industries including chemicals, pharmaceuticals, Adblue, fuels, oils, LPG, lubricants, food and beverage, waste & recycling, landfill & leachate, agriculture, utilities, pumping and environment, rail and security.
