Powelectrics have delivered another Industry4.0 Metron telemetry solution, this time to Craggs Energy, an innovative and expanding business, which supplies over 50 million litres per annum of fuels and lubricants to UK homes, farms and businesses via three depots and a national partner network.
This image shows Craggs Padiham Depot, where Powelectrics remote monitoring solution was installed on four 230,000 litre tanks.
Prior to installation, Craggs employees read levels locally using a clear pipe on the side of each tank. Pipes tended to discolour quickly, due to colour transference from the fuels. Sometimes they lasted under a year before levels could no longer be read. Replacing the pipes was both disruptive and expensive.
Even when the levels were visible, local operatives were obliged to climb steps into the bund to see the pipes, which could be hazardous, especially in wet and freezing Winter conditions, just when heating oil was in greatest demand and levels were changing most quickly!
Each of Powelectrics award-winning Metron telemetry devices offers four analogue inputs, so for this site, only one Metron telemetry device was required. Level readings are taken from all four tanks and data reported to our MetronView cloud using just one device/SIM card. For Craggs, this represents an exceptionally cost-effective IoT solution in terms of both hardware and data.
MetronView is Powelectrics cloud. It offers customisable dashboards, reporting & alarms. It is a highly secure and scalable IIoT solution, currently processing millions of readings every day, whilst only using a fraction of its processing capabilities.
External power was available at this site, but Metron m2m devices can be battery or even solar powered and they are often deployed where no external power is available.
Units can be set up simply on site using the integral display. No IT programming skills are needed. In this case the Metron was set-up by Powelectrics prior to dispatch and installation. Once on site, it became clear that more frequent, hourly transmissions were better for this application Powelectrics were simply able to send the new configuration via our MetronView software.
For this project Powelectrics SPS level sensors were ideal. They are easy to install, flexible & robust, offering long term stability and great accuracy at affordable prices. They come with 3, 5 and 10m cables, so they are well-adapted to these enormous tanks. There are also SPS options for ATEX, hygienic and aggressive environments.
With the telemetry solution installed, regular data and low-level alerts are reported via Powelectrics MetronView cloud to authorised users, including colleagues based 25 miles away. Its allows them ensure that these huge tanks are stocked up and ready to fill the fleet for daily deliveries and it allows them to plan logical, efficient distribution routes.
James Turner, Craggs Energy Technical Manager, “We are truly delighted with this solution. Powelectrics IoT technology has delivered the perfect balance between cost and performance. Metron telemetry and the SPS sensors have provided us will reliable data and alerts, improved depot safety and generated great efficiencies in our stock control and logistics functions. We’re also really impressed by the level of technical and commercial support we have received at every point in this project!”
This Industry4.0 solution has been so successful that Craggs Energy’s sister company, Cragg’s Environmental, are now installing Powelectrics telemetry. Craggs Environmental provides commercial and public sector customers with a range of fuel management services to minimise the risks associated with using and storing large volumes of fuel.
Customers include public service organisations, such as prisons and hospitals, which use standby generators for emergency power. People’s lives may depend on those generators having enough fuel to function.
Powelectrics telemetry is being rolled out to these key organisations so that Craggs can ensure these generators will be available when they are needed. Powelectrics m2m kit will also be used as a form of remote condition monitoring, monitoring generator performance and identifying maintenance needs.
Powelectrics act as a connection between the world of sensors and the Internet of Things. Our ’connected sensor’ solutions are employed in many industries including chemicals, pharmaceuticals, Adblue, fuels, oils, LPG, lubricants, food and beverage, waste & recycling, landfill & leachate, agriculture, utilities, pumping and environment, rail and security.
