New PRT signal conditioning and filter product launch

Kemo Ltd is pleased to announce the release of the DR PRT, this new product has been developed over the last two years in association with partners in the Wind Energy and Power Generation sectors.

The DR PRT is a combination of a precision PRT (Platinum Resistance Thermometer) signal conditioner and a Kemo flat response low pass filter, housed in an industrial DIN rail mount package for easy industrial installation.

The electrical insulation system for wires used in generators, electric motors, transformers, and other wire- wound electrical components is divided into different classes by temperature and temperature rise. The electrical insulation system is sometimes referred to as insulation class or thermal classification. The different classes are defined by NEMA, Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and IEC standards.

For complete electrically operated appliances, the “insulation system” is the overall design of electrical insulation of the energised components to ensure correct function of the device and protection of the user from electric shock.

The DR PRT product has been developed to overcome issues found in some classes of generators which have integral PRT temperature sensors in their generating coils, these can be subject to a strong magnetic field as the machinery rotates. This powerful varying field can cause a spurious reading on the PRT sensors, which in turn can cause aliasing problems with SCADA systems. Accurate measurement of the relevant class temperature is an important factor in machinery monitoring and operation, filtering of spurious signals means a more accurate measurement of temperature, which in turn can reduce generator load. The PR DRT was originally developed to suit Class F generators but it is possible for modification to suit other classes.

The DR PRT has a measurement temperature range of -40C to +160C. Input is a 2 or 3 wire input, to compensate for longer length cables. Output is both 0-10V and 4-20mA signals.

The use of a high-quality analogue filter is an easy to apply solution to existing systems and does not require any changes to software and subsequent verification.

For other filter applications the DR PRT is only part of the easy to use DR Filter range which offers a wide range of other signal conditioning and filter solutions, including:

  • Fixed frequency filters with a wide range of filter responses available
  • Variable frequency filters with a wide range of filter responses available
  • IEPE signal conditioning
  • Charge Amplifier conditioning
  • 4-20mA signal conditioning
