High accuracy digital temperature solutions

MMS Electronics improves temperature measurement accuracy without difficulty. The Smartec SMT172 is a complete digital ultra-low power, factory calibrated, high accuracy sensor with pulse width modulated output signal. PWM output sensors offer have high noise immunity and high reference accuracy. They are easy to interface and can easy be multiplexed. The duty cycle is proportional to the measured temperature. Inaccuracy is 0.1 ºC in the range of -10ºC to 100ºC with a -45ºC min. and +130ºC max. with very low noise of 0.0001ºC. When adding a RC network the sensor can also be used as an analogue sensor. Designed for supply voltage 3V, 3.3V and 5V. The full voltage range is from 2.7 V to 5.5 V. This is the most energy efficient temperature sensor in the world with an average current of < 60uA or 220nA based on 1 measurement per second. Application are found in wearables, scientific, environmental, medical or industrial measurements.

How is it done:

The SMT172 is designed using the most recent advances in silicon temperature sensing technology, the SMT172 has applied sophisticated IC design techniques and high-precision calibration methods. The sensor has a pulse width modulated PWM output signal, where the duty cycle is proportional to the measured temperature value. A simple calculation returns the sensor temperature. This makes it possible for the sensor to interface directly to a microprocessor without using an Analogue to Digital converter. It is an extremely easy way to measure the temperature with the factory calibrated SMT172 sensor.

Packages:

The Smartec SMT172 is available in TO18, TO92, TO220, SOT223, SOIC, HEC and DIE packages. The SMT172-SOIC can be used for example on a PCB to protect nearby component from overheating. MMS Electronics has two probes available. A slim 5mm probe that uses the SMT172-HEC sensor and a robust stainless steel probe SMT RVS1802 that uses the most accurate SMT172-18 sensor. Both probes have a 5 meter shielded cable.

For quick evaluation of the SMT172 temperature sensor MMS Electronics has two evaluation boards with USB interface. The SMTAS04USBmini can measure up to 4 sensors and SMTAS08USBmini up to max. 8 sensors. A sensor to I²C converter board SMT172TOI2C is available for applications that require connection to an I²C bus. This board also converts the SMT172 sensor output so it can be used as a replacement for the obsolete SMT160-30 sensor.

Additionally MMS Electronics supplies inexpensive ready to use temperature logging systems for food safety, cold chain, environmental or vaccine monitoring applications. The MS EL-WiFi series are Wi-Fi enabled data loggers that periodically transfer the data to the cloud or a web enabled device such as smartphones, tablet or computer. Multiple modules can be monitored and alarms point’s set-up. When an alarm is activated an email alert is sent to the user.

For temperature or humidity measurement while goods are travelling simply throw the MS EL-CC or MS EL-PDF module in with your shipment. Once activated measurements are time and date stamped and logged. On the other end simply plug into the USB port and check what happened during the travel of your goods. Waterproof plastic bags are available so the logger tag can be re-used for up to a year.Pre-programmed units for chilled, frozen, ripening food goods and ambient pharma, blood and platelets products are available.

MMS Electronics is based in Pool-in-Wharfedale, Leeds, and was established in 1994 by Marc Arijs, an experienced electronics design engineer. MMS designed the controls for the world’s first wearable garment that integrated the Apple® iPod. Over the years the company has established strong relationships with top quality LCD display and sensor manufacturers.

Today, MMS Electronics Ltd is the authorised UK distributor for the 2,000 plus LCD display products of trusted German manufacturer Electronic Assembly GmbH (Display Visions) and also represents many other world class display and sensor manufacturers.
