One of the most exciting innovations ever will feature at this year’s Advanced Engineering UK. Over the two days of the UK’s leading engineering and manufacturing event, at the NEC, Birmingham on November 3 and 4, 2021, an original prototype of the ExoMars rover will be on display.

The Airbus Defence and Space UK prototype, commonly known as Bruno, is semi-autonomous and equipped with all the same technology as the final rover, including the sensors, actuators and cameras that allow the rover to see in 3D while navigating the red planet. The final flight rover will be equipped with a drill that can bore two metres deep, and metal wheels that have the same flexibility as rubber, without risking contamination to any life that it finds.

The ExoMars rover will be the first rover used to directly search for life on Mars as part of a joint mission between the European Space Agency (ESA) and Russia. The rover is just one example of how the UK’s engineering industry is leading the way in space and satellite innovation.

This year, Advanced Engineering UK introduces a new show zone dedicated entirely to space and satellite innovation. A new partner of the show, and speaking at the event, is Satellite Applications Catapult. One of ten catapults established to transform the UK’s capability for innovation and help drive economic growth, the technology and innovation company boosts UK productivity by helping organisations harness the power of satellite-based services. The company has been working on projects in the space sector throughout the UK, such as IFSAC, a collaboration with the agricultural sector to educate and demonstrate how satellite technologies can help optimise the production of rice, soybean, and table grapes.

Quantum Design UK & Ireland is celebrating 21 years of Spectroscopic Ellipsometry workshops with its partners, J A Woollam.

This free of charge workshop is aimed at both experienced ellipsometry users as well as people new to ellipsometry. The format of the workshop includes an introduction, fundamentals of ellipsometric data analysis, and an overview of ellipsometric applications in both research and production. New emerging applications are highlighted.

A celebration of the best in UK manufacturing and engineering excellence and innovation launches at the NEC June 2022, and includes the launch of three sector specific events; Design Engineering Expo, Engineering Expo and Manufacturing Expo.

In a first for the sector, Nineteen Events are working closely with MAKE UK, IMechE, IED and stakeholders from across the industry, to build and deliver the UK’s first week-long event celebrating the UK’s manufacturing and engineering sector. A series of live events that showcase the complete manufacturing and engineering solutions and supply chain, alongside additional exclusive virtual events that together will encourage conversation, knowledge sharing and action.

The UK remains a global force for manufacturing and engineering; driving innovation, leading on the industrial agenda, the green economy and industry 4.0, however in a post-Covid and post-Brexit world, Britain’s standing, and its future, will require engineering and manufacturing to grow and strengthen. Manufacturing and Engineering Week or M&E Week seeks to celebrate the sector, showcasing innovation, sharing successes and future insight, raise critical discussion and is a destination for professionals to source suppliers and solutions in order to secure the right partners to keep them competitive and grow the UK sector.

Three new sector specific events:

• Engineering Expo is dedicated to the driving force behind manufacturing, keynotes lifting the lid on the latest developments and most interesting engineering projects will run alongside practical workshops and an innovative showcase of the latest technologies and solutions.
• Design Engineering Expo focuses on the challenges and innovations at the heart of the sector. Covering electronics, embedded design through to testing, the event will showcase the latest technologies propelling the future of design engineering.

Over 2,500 visitors from Germany and abroad met for the Innovation Dialog as well as for the first SMSI Sensor and Measurement Science International Conference during the three days of the fair. With 188 exhibitors, the event boasts a considerable size compared to the previous digital trade fairs. Thus, the SENSOR+TEST was again able to maintain its position as the leading international event for sensor, measuring, and testing technology.

“For us as the organisers as well as for the many exhibitors and visitors, this digital SENSOR+TEST was uncharted territory. And we’re proud indeed to have been able to completely carry out such a digital event so well. Realising that these three days were no full-fledged substitute for a presence event, we were in a position to clearly advance and expand the digitalisation of our leading fair,” said organiser Holger Bödeker.

Thus – after the first truly online event in 2020 – this year’s edition started off with a significantly improved system and a plethora of innovations, presentations, and talks as well as optimised opportunities for digital communication among all the participants.

In fact, the participants made abundant use of these opportunities not only to obtain information on the many interesting innovations at the digital trade-fair “stands,” but also to talk directly with the exhibitors’ experts via modern chat functions and to make appointments.

The focus was mainly on the series of presentations: In 50 in-depth lectures on technology and 91 short-form talks, the exhibitors presented their latest solutions and trends in sensor and measuring technology. The attendance of thousands of participants show how immensely interesting and up-to-date these innovations are.

This year’s special topic, Sensor and Measuring Technology for Condition Monitoring, was discussed with great interest. The digital-format contributions to this topic provided by the exhibitors were great public attractions. Also the community stand, Young Innovative Enterprises, was held digitally. The ten participating start-ups were also able to present their fresh ideas to the visitors via the trade-fair platform.

The number of visitors, 2,500, was as expected less than at a presence event (2019: approx. 7,000). The same is true for the exhibitor numbers, 188 (2019: 538). “We have to be satisfied with these figures in consideration of the current situation. All of us were able to gain a lot of experience during the preparation of this online fair and were anxious to see how the Innovation Dialog would fare under digital conditions. Now we can say that we were not disappointed. And we hope that all exhibitors, visitors, and conference participants were able to profit from the SENSOR+TEST,” said Holger Bödeker.

A new era of conferences has been heralded 

The SENSOR+TEST was able to continue its long and successful tradition in hosting scientific conferences while also heralding a new era with the first parallel SMSI Sensor and Measurement Science International Conference (3 – 6 May 2021). Over 220 participants attended 167 presentations, tutorials, and discussions. The new format packed a scientific punch, as linked up national and international representatives from research, science, and industry. Thus, the SMSI provided a platform for the exchange of future-oriented research results. A pioneering science slam allowed young scientists to show off their innovations in unusual, but entertaining ways. This they did smoothly and very successfully.

The next SMSI conference will be held in 2023 – again parallel with the SENSOR+TEST.

SENSOR+TEST 2022: Real, virtual, and hybrid 

Next year the SENSOR+TEST is to be held again as a presence event from 10 to 12 May in the halls of the Nuremberg Exhibition Center. Complementing this event is a digital part to take place beyond the three day of the fair during the entire year in which novelties from the exhibitors will be broadcast in various channels. “This should create an ideal link between both worlds and help to advance next year’s event. Thus, the SENSOR+TEST will continue to be a hybrid event in the future,” explained Holger Bödeker.

On the science side, the 2022 fair will be complemented by the 21. ITG/GMA-Fachtagung Sensoren und Messsysteme. And Sensor and Measuring Technology for Digitalisation is to continue the long series of special topics dealing with a future-relevant and exciting topics for exhibitors, visitors, and online participants.

“Nobody can say now under what external conditions exhibitors and visitors can hopefully come together again in person next year in Nuremberg. For us, this is top priority as many of our participants want nothing more than to be together again at a real fair, face to face – and we’d love to invite you,” says Holger Bödeker. Peter Krause, CEO of PRIGNITZ Mikrosystemtechnik and chairman of the AMA Association for Sensors and Measurement, is also looking ahead to 2022. “This was our first digital trade fair. It was nice to talk and exchange ideas, but we look forward to the next presence fair.”

Preparations for Digital SENSOR+TEST, taking place from 4 to 6 May 2021, are running at full speed. More than 160 exhibitors are to present their latest achievements in sensor and measuring technologies during and after the trade fair. The participants can expect a comprehensive presentation program with exciting and in-depth technical talks.

“We’re on the home stretch and looking forward to the Digital Innovation Dialog among exhibitors and participants which is being offered again this year in all its facets by the SENSOR+TEST. Even if we don’t reach the size of previous presence events, we’ll still have over 160 exhibitors, who’ll have plenty of solutions among wide-ranging applications to offer the public,” says organiser Holger Bödeker.

The exhibitors are showing a plethora of innovative developments this year – and not just in text and images, but also in numerous video presentations with direct contact to the speakers per chat or video conference. Visitors can link up with experts per apps or internet portals, taking advantage of their consulting competence.

A variety of novelties can already be regarded. Thus, there are already more than 250 new developments on the SENSOR+TEST website  (https://www.sensor-test.de/direct/productnews) – and every day there are more. So it is worth it to take a good look – during and after the fair.

Comprehensive Action Program

As expected from the SENSOR+TEST, visitors will find a comprehensive action program even in this digital edition. In the lecture forum, exhibitors are to present new developments, products, and applications on all three days of the fair. Even this year’s special topic, “Sensor and Measuring Technology for Condition Monitoring,” and the digital community stand, “Young Innovative Enterprises,” will not come up short. “Whether it’s about the special topic, presentations, the AMA Innovation Award, or the parallel SMSI, the Sensor and Measurement Science International Conference: The participants expect information and inspiration from all sides and in-depth,” says Holger Bödeker.

The AMA Association for Sensor and Measurement Technology invites you to the international congress: Sensor and Measurement Science International (SMSI) 2021. Due to the COVID19 pandemic, the conference will be held digitally, in parallel with the SENSOR+TEST 2021 trade fair from May 3 to 6, 2021. The official SMSI 2021 program is now available online.

SMSI 2021 networks national and international representatives from research, science and industry. Current research results from the fields of sensor technology, measurement technology and metrology will be presented. Topics include: Innovative hydrogen sensors for fuel cell vehicles, novel approaches to modeling thermal-electrical behavior of pyroelectric infrared sensors, the development of non-invasive pressure sensors, and the evaluation of ceramic high-temperature sensor housings.

In addition to many technical presentations, SMSI 2021 invites all participants to attend international plenary lectures. Among them, for example, NIST on a Chip: Disseminating the SI through Quantum Sensors. Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt reports on the revised SI for Innovation, Science and the Second Quantum Revolution, and the University of California on Invariance of Measured Quantities across the Science.
