Watlow’s New 1/32 DIN PM LEGACY™ Controller is the First in the Industry to Feature Bluetooth® Wireless Technology

Watlow®, an industry leader in the design and manufacture of complete thermal systems, recently introduced its new 1/32 DIN PM LEGACY™ controllers, which are the first 1/32 DIN controllers on the market to incorporate Bluetooth® wireless technology. Bluetooth® is used to enable EZ-LINK™, Watlow’s mobile app for setting up, monitoring and adjusting PM PLUS™ and PM LEGACY controllers.

Watlow’s PM LEGACY SERIES panel-mount controllers are industry-leading PID controllers that offer optimal performance utilizing simple control and menu functionality without complex features. They are ideally suited for basic applications and usage levels.

PM LEGACY controllers include one universal input and an option for up to two outputs. These controllers can be ordered as PID process controllers or as dedicated over and under-temperature limit controllers. The LEGACY SERIES controllers feature a SMOOTH-TOUCH™ keypad eliminating contamination points on the front of the controller and creating a better seal on the front panel as well as a function key for simple, one-touch operating of user-defined, repetitive activities. PM LEGACY controllers are backward compatible with EZ-ZONE® PM controllers.

“There was a need in the market for a simple controller for basic applications, so we developed the LEGACY SERIES to fulfill that void,” said Andy Borkowski, product manager. “Our customers don’t always want the most powerful, high-end controller. Some applications require basic control and this product line is made for those situations. Earlier this year we introduced the 1/16 DIN and now we can offer the 1/32 DIN as well, which is the first of this size in the industry to incorporate Bluetooth® technology.”

GF Piping Systems launches NeoFlow pressure regulating valve: the polymer balancing cure for water utility networks

Co-developed with OFUI NeoFlow pressure regulating valve (PRV) allows water utilities to easily implement pressure management technology and benefit from a renewed water network, a solution to avoid non-revenue water. The compact polymer valve is nine times lighter in weight and uses 40% less installation time than a standard metal PRV. The axial flow technology makes NeoFlow more accurate in operation.

The NeoFlow PRV with its pressure management technology is targeted towards existing and future water utility networks helping them reduce excess consumption, existing leakage and unnecessary mechanical stress. As a polymer PRV, NeoFlow offers numerous advantages over traditional metal valves, such as a long, stable, corrosion-free life and low maintenance requirements.

“NeoFlow provides water utilities an easy entry into balanced pressure management and automated actuation, leading to a more sustainable distribution network,” says Olivier Narbey, senior business development manager for water networks at GF Piping Systems. “Designed using only three primary components (without an actuator stem and diaphragm) and a single moving part, the polymer NeoFlow PRV significantly reduces maintenance costs, raises reliability, and simplifies the life of operators and installers of water networks.” Additionally, GF Piping Systems can design and pre-assemble an installation kit that will save up to 40% of installation costs when upgrading an existing site or creating a new PRV chamber.

NeoFlow’s axial flow design allows a highly accurate and stable flow (down to 0) even at a small operating differential. The NeoFlow PRV has been successfully used by IRETI allowing pressure control with 1% to 100% opening of the valve, delivering extreme precision and stability, says the IRETI’s Water Leakage Manager. IRETI manages the integrated water service, through various companies operating in Northern Italy, for a total of approximately 2.7 million inhabitants. A 25% pressure reduction in networks leads to up to 75% less pipe burst frequencies. The higher flow precision also enables pressure management in low-pressure systems.

Range extension for innovative wireless torque sensor

Sensor Technology has extended its new range of non-contact torque sensors up to 13,000Nm. When the range was launched in late 2020, the largest unit was 500Nm.

“We have been very encouraged by the interesting in the new sensors,” says Sales Manager, Mark Ingham. “The launch plan was originally to start with the commodity sizes and gradually introduce the larger sensors, but interest has been such that we need to meet demand almost immediately.”

Sensor Technology has specialised in wireless torque sensing for many years, mainly offering a solution based on detecting surface acoustic waves. It’s new sensors, designated the SGR510/520 series, however use a full four element strain gauge bridge design.

“The new sensors have the advantage that they can accurately measure and record sudden spikes in torque load,” explains Mark. “In the past this data was generally not required by plant and machinery operators, but with the growth in automated continuous monitoring it is becoming more and more important. Any torque spike could have an immediate effect on operations, while a series of them may indicate the beginnings of a problem.”

The new design also compensates for any extraneous forces, such as bending moments, inadvertently applied to the sensor, improves sensitivity and has a wide temperature tolerance. Again, these are all attributes that have become increasingly desirable in recent years as there is an increasing need for sophisticated modelling of operational performance.

In use, the four strain gauges are glued onto the low hysteresis high performance nickel chromium steel shaft that is to be monitored in a square formation set at 45deg to the axis of rotation. When torque is applied to the shaft two gauges are stretched into tension and two go into compression, the difference between the tension and compression values being proportional to the torque in the shaft.

An ultra-miniature microcontroller, mounted on a rotor and powered by an inductive coil, measures the differential values in each strain gauge and transmits them back to the stator digitally, via the same coil. State of the art strain gauge signal conditioning techniques are then used to convert raw live data into precise torque value measurements. This set up provides a high bandwidth, high over range and overload tolerances.

The TorqSense SGR510/520 offers several significant advantages over conventional torque sensors. It eliminates the sort of noise pickup and signal corruption associated with slip ring and other analogue methods of transferring torque data from rotor to stator. The over range capacity means true overrange values are captured rather than ‘maxing-out’ at the technology’s upper limit, while the 400% mechanical overload limit is unlikely to be breached in the vast majority of applications.

Mark explains further: “External noise pickup into the wiring is virtually eliminated due to the short distance between the strain gauges and the rotor’s measuring circuits. Further, multipoint calibration reduces any linearity errors within the sensor. Measurement of shaft temperature allows for full temperature correction for changes in modulus of the shaft over the full temperature range of -20 to +50 deg C”

“For ease of use there is a built-in test function,” says Mark, who summarises the new TorqSense SGR510/520 with: “Most torque sensors require the use of slip rings to transfer torque readings from the rotating shaft to the static readout. These are noisy in use, slow and fiddly to set up and, as wearing parts, are not always reliable.

The range extension means the SGR series is available in sizes from 1Nm to   13000Nm. All units are accurate to +/-0.1% and resolution to +/-0.01% of the transducer’s full scale

Other features include an optional adjustable moving average filter, power supply range from 12VDC to 32VDC, user configurable analogue output voltages, a choice of RS232 communications, USB interface, CAN bus interface, external Ethernet gateway, TorqView software and LabView virtual instruments.

The new SGR510/520 series will be suitable for many applications for testing motors or driven loads in many industries including Defence, aerospace, and Automotive.  Quality Assurance depts in gearbox, pump, motor, and bottle capping machinery manufacturers will find the ease of use appealing, and Technical Departments of Universities and Research Institutes will find the versatility of the available customer selectable options will help with precise measurements.

Another area of increasing applications is in mixing and extruding where viscosity and consistency measurement during processes is becoming increasing important

Foundry operations boosted by SEKO pump upgrade

A large-scale manufacturer of resin sand mixers, facing concerns over the efficiency and environmental impact of its equipment, turned to global dosing pump specialist SEKO for a multi-purpose solution.

Within the foundry industry, resin-coated sand has for many years been a popular material for iron casting moulds as it is easily compacted and provides a smooth, consistent and defect-free surface to the finished product. Resin sand is considered among the best moulding sands for the casting of steel, cast iron and non-ferrous metals, including automotive parts such as pumps, motors and engine blocks.

Resin moulding sand is produced by dosing one or more binder chemicals – including furan resin – into crude sand before mixing and pouring the material into casts to harden, ready for the product pattern to be imprinted.

benzene, toluene,

and xylenes

benzene, toluene,

and xylenes

A major drawback of this process is that when furan resin is thermally decomposed during metal casting, air pollutants such as benzene, toluene and xylenes are produced which, if not closely controlled, can have a significant effect on the environment along with the health of workers and local residents.

For one sand mixer manufacturer, this was unacceptable, and they decided to make fundamental changes to their systems in order to improve operational efficiency and reduce environmental impact.

Looking to reduce the polluting impact of its sand mixers without compromising their performance, the operator approached world-leading chemical dosing pump specialist SEKO to deliver a solution.

SEKO’s technical team carried out a comprehensive assessment of the client’s system and discovered that the existing process dosed furan resin and benzenesulfonic acid into the crude sand via a gear pump which, while providing high output, was considerably lacking in accuracy.

This inevitably caused excessive chemical dosing which, as well as causing costly wastage, exacerbated the emission of polluting gases. In addition, the existing equipment was noisy, caused large flow and pressure pulsations and had a high maintenance requirement.

Taking into account the client’s specific process requirements along with the nature of the additives being pumped, the SEKO technical team recommended the Spring MS1 mechanical diaphragm dosing pump for an accurate, reliable and cost-effective alternative to gear pumps.

The Spring MS1’s analogue-controlled dosing accuracy meant that the binders could be metered in proportion to the volume of crude sand, resulting in a consistent mix while minimising chemical wastage. Meanwhile, the pump’s high-grade PTFE diaphragms and PVC/PVDF head – known for their superior chemical compatibility – were considered ideal for handling the aggressive benzenesulfonic acid and helping to ensure the pump’s reliable, long-life performance.

The Spring MS1, with its zero-leakage profile and impressive low failure rate, is proven to be capable of continuous dosing. This is in part due to an intelligent ball valve design which allows the component to be easily removed for cleaning without the need for regular shutdown maintenance – minimizing the client’s running costs.

The flexible Spring MS1 was also an appealing choice due to its capacity for receiving ancillary products, including variable-frequency motors and pulse dampers to further enhance chemical dosing consistency. Meanwhile, the pump’s back pressure valve ensures accurate dosing even in the event of a change in water pressure within the pipeline.

As well as an improvement in the overall dosing performance of the resin sand mixer, the client has seen a significant reduction in the emission of pollutants, allowing them to protect workers and neighbours while reassuring existing and prospective customers that their product is environmentally responsible.

Another example of a SEKO solution helping customers achieve long-term, cost-effective improvements in their daily operations.

J.A. Woollam has teamed up with Linkam to bring precise temperature control to its ellipsometry instruments

Thin films can be used to modify the optical characteristics of a surface, its electrical conductivity, its hardness or lubricity, its corrosion resistance, and its chemical inertness. It is important to understand how these properties are affected by temperature. Some materials even go through a phase transition at specific temperatures that greatly alters their optical properties. J.A. Woollam’s range of instruments provide accurate thin-film characterisation, which can be further enhanced by studying the material’s temperature dependence.

The knowledge of J.A. Woollam’s dedicated scientists and engineers has been combined with Linkam’s expertise in temperature-controlled stages to form a close partnership. By adapting its market-leading heat stages for J.A. Woollam’s custom ellipsometry instruments, the partnership provides thin-film researchers with tailor-made, temperature-controlled ellipsometers for a broad set of applications.
