Broadband Technology 2000 Ltd

BT2000 has a synergistic range of electronic systems, boxes and components which are used in a hugely diverse range of applications from miniature die, used in medical surgery, to major security systems.

BT2000 www.bt2000.co.uk was created in 1995 as a major supplier to the telecoms industry in a time of huge growth and great expectations in the electronics sector. Although our product mix has changed, our passion to bring new entrepreneurial electronic products into the 21st century has grown exponentially to meet those expectations.

Located on the M4 corridor and in the Berkshire technology triangle, we are ideally located to service both the logistical and technical needs of our international customer base.

Our SignalQuest range covers the nano-power miniature mechanical, vibration, tilt, shock & acceleration switch sensors, used in security and tracking (see positioned on the bee below) whilst the rugged GIX Gravity Gyro Inclinometers are ideal for diggers and freight loading applications.

The InvenSense motion ICs and miniature MEMs microphones are world leaders in “Sensing Everything”. Integrating MotionFusion algorithms & calibration firmware with leading edge gyroscopes, accelerometers, compasses into miniature MEMs, their products are used in applications as diverse as remote controls, trackers (see bird below) to UAVs & wearables.

Memsic is unique in their method of sensing acceleration and gas flow.  They are the first and only company to integrate a MEMS inertial sensor and signal processing circuitry together on a standard monolithic CMOS wafer. The thermal MEMS accelerometer is based on the principle of convection of heated gas molecules within a sealed cavity. Highly accurate temperature sensors can detect the change in temperature profile resulting from very small changes in acceleration (or inclination). This makes them virtually immune to out-of-band vibration and shock (providing shock tolerance of 50,000g!)

Within the Memsic low noise, high accuracy AMR (Anisotropic Magneto-Resistive) magnetic sensor the resistance of the sensor varies with the applied magnetic field; this makes it ideal for electronic compass, GPS navigation and magnetic field detection applications.

Germany based Sensdev offer pressure sensors in Differential, Gage, Relative, Vacuum and Absolute pressure types. They supply both Analogue & 15bit Digital output (via I2C or SPI) in a single package with a measuring range of 0.6mbar to 25bar, wide supply voltage range from 3.3V to 40V, temperature compensated (-40C to +125C) and fast response times of 0.56ms to 20ms (factory selectable). They are automotive approved (SCPE -55C to 150C with 4kV filtering available) and can be supplied to a customer’s unique cable and connector specification.

Typical applications are automotive (tyre pressure etc), medical respirators & inhalers, breathalysers (see fish below), automation systems and test equipments.

Our low ESR supercapacitor range offer customers, who use battery powered products for RF applications, the ability to extend the life of the battery by minimising switching stress and extending the temperature range of the battery.

The miniature Cellergy Supercapacitor range offers Voltages of 1.4V to 12V, 7mF to 700mF, -40C to +70C with upto 500000 discharge cycles, all with Ultra-low leakage – Applications includes remote metering, RFID Tags and LED flash.

The miniature UTC Ultracapacitor technology utilises metal oxide deposited on titanium substrate and sealed with a polymer between electrodes. This allows one of the lowest profiles in the market to date from 0.18mm thick, a wide voltage range of 2V to 16V, 2mF to 120mF, -40C +75C and a full discharge cycle of 10 million+.

Vinatech offers the small package Electric Double Layer Capacitor (EDLC) and Hybrid Capacitor (P-EDLC) HY-CAP brand of Super Capacitors. The HY-CAP series offers high capacitance ranges from 500mF to 500 Farad in EDLC and the Hybrid P-EDLC technology doubles the capacitance density to 3000F. Applications include Electric toys, AMR (Automatic Meter Reading), UPS (uninterruptible power supply), electric valves, industrial robot/UAV and HEV (Hybrid Electrical Vehicle).

The Cymbet miniature rechargeable solid state battery and RTC combo IC offers battery backup for upto 6 days. See Four New Cutting-Edge IR Temperature Sensors at the Machine Building Show

Calex Electronics, the world renowned British manufacturer of power converters and infrared temperature sensors, will be demonstrating several exciting new product ranges at the Machine Building Exhibition.

With more than 50 years’ experience in measurement and control, Calex is able to combine detailed application knowledge with a keen understanding of cutting edge technology to produce what is arguably the most innovative range of IR temperature sensors in the world.

Here are some brief details about just four of the new sensors you can see on their stand:

1. New Smartphone Configurable Infrared Temperature Sensor.

The PyroNFC is an advanced non-contact infrared temperature sensor with voltage and alarm outputs, plus wireless NFC communications, all of which can be used simultaneously.

It measures from 0°C to 1000°C, accurately and repeatably, with a fast response time of 125 ms. It is sealed to IP65 and will operate in ambient temperatures up to 85°C without cooling, so it can withstand harsh environments.

Simply touch an installed sensor with a smartphone or NFC device and read the temperature continuously using the free-to-download Android app.

Use the app to instantly save configuration settings to sensors with no need to connect them to anything – not even the power supply!

Configurable settings include temperature range, linear voltage output type and scale, alarm output threshold and hysteresis, averaging period, emissivity setting, reflected temperature compensation and peak or valley hold processing.

The PyroNFC is extremely small, making it ideal for mounting in tight spaces. It measures just 31 mm diameter by 29 mm long. The form factor, with side-entry cable, is perfect for brake testing applications, plus many others.

2. IR Temperature Sensor with Lightning Fast Response Time, Tiny Measurement Spot and Continuous LED Sighting.

With its amazing 0.001 second response time, the PyroCube is the fastest IR temperature sensor in the world. Combine this speed with an ability to measure targets as small as 1.6 mm diameter and you have a sensor that can measure rapidly moving and small objects on almost any modern production line.

The continuous LED sighting shows exactly where the PyroCube is aimed and indicates the precise size of the measurement spot while readings are being taken.

It can measure temperatures in the range 0°C to 500°C, and has a current or voltage analogue output and choice of alarm outputs.

The optional multilingual touch screen interface can be used for temperature display, data logging, sensor configuration and alarms.

The large, bright backlit temperature display is visible from a distance and turns red in an alarm condition. You can also see a graph of the measured temperature and log more than a year of data to a single MicroSD Card. All the sensor’s configuration settings can be adjusted via the intuitive touch screen interface.

3. Fibre Optic Pyrometer for Harsh Applications

The FibreMini infrared sensor is designed for measuring high temperatures from 250°C to 2000°C.

Its miniature sensing head withstands 200°C ambient temperature and is sealed to IP65. It measures just 12 mm diameter by 48 mm long and contains no electronics, which makes it ideal for use near induction heaters and strong electromagnetic fields.

The FibreMini measures temperature over the spectral range 2.0 to 2.6 µm for improved accuracy on metals. It has built-in laser sighting which can be used while the measurement is taken, allowing the user to see the precise location and size of the measurement spot during operation.

The touch screen display offers advanced configuration, signal processing and data logging capabilities. There is a choice of analogue or digital output and alarm relays on all models.

http://www.calex.co.uk/product/temperature-measurement/infrared-temperature-sensors/fibremini/

4. Multi-Channel Infrared Temperature Monitoring System

The PyroMiniBus is an industrial infrared temperature monitoring system, with miniature sensing heads and optional display modules.

PyroMiniBus sensors are designed to measure the surface temperature of non-reflective materials in industrial applications, from -20°C to 1000°C. They are sealed to IP65, built from 316 stainless steel, and fully tested to industrial EMC standards.

PyroMiniBus sensors have an operating temperature rating of up to 120°C with no need for cooling.

The sensors measure just 45 mm long (plus cable gland), so they can fit into the smallest of spaces.

Up to 6 sensors can be connected to the optional PM180 interface module, which provides temperature display, configuration, and high-capacity data logging to a MicroSD Card.

Analogue and relay outputs are available via separate DIN rail mounted modules.

With up to 6 sensors connected to one PM180, the PyroMiniBus is an ideal low-cost non-contact temperature measurement system.

To measure more than 6 locations, PyroMiniBus sensors and PM180 sub-networks may be connected to an RS485 Modbus SCADA system or PLC. It is possible to measure the temperature of hundreds or thousands of locations on the same network.

Bluetooth interface developed for wireless TorqSense

A Bluetooth interface and Android app have been developed by Sensor Technology Ltd for its non-contact torque sensor, the TorqSense.

TorqSense is unusual in that it does not have to be physically connected to the shaft whose torque level is being measured. Instead two tiny piezoelectric combs are glued onto the shaft and an adjacent radio transmitter/pickup monitors their distortion due to the shaft’s rotation, using radio frequency waves. There is no physical connection between shaft and sensor, hence no need for delicate wiring or fiddly slip rings.

Bluetooth is conceptually very similar. It is a wireless technology that allows data exchange over short distances and like TorqSense transmits uses radio waves. It is commonly found in hands-free phones and other mobile devices, so is used by many many people in their everyday lives. In the engineering and industrial worlds it is often favoured as a wireless alternative to RS-232 data cables and can connect several devices simultaneously.

Thus Sensor Technology’s new Bluetooth module brings total wireless flexibility to torque measurement. In use the module simply plugs into the TorqSense’s existing 15 way ‘D’ digital lead connector. As well as collecting the torque signal, the Bluetooth allows the transducer to be powered through the interface and also provides a USB output for connection to a PC, which allows a full version of the TorqView software to be used.

Having a Bluetooth enabled TorqSense transducer removes the need for cable runs from the sensing head to the receiver. This can make system lay out easier and even allow torque to be measured in real time in situation where it was previously impossible.

Significantly the new unit also allows monitoring of the torque signal on any device that has Bluetooth capabilities.

The Android app enables real-timing viewing of the current and peak values of torque, speed and temperature of a TorqSense reading via a standard mobile phone or tablet computer. This provides instant access to information without the need to set up a computer.

Impress to unveil new ATEX-approved pressure transmitters and submersible level transducers at Sensors & Instrumentation 2015

At the Sensors & Instrumentation exhibition (30th September – 1st October 2015) at the NEC, Birmingham, instrumentation specialist Impress Sensors & Systems Ltd will be showcasing new ranges of ATEX-certified industrial pressure transmitters and submersible level transmitters.

The IND range of ATEX-certified industrial pressure transmitters is manufactured in the UK by Impress Sensors. The transmitter has a piezoresistive ceramic or stainless steel silicon pressure sensor installed in a stainless steel housing, providing it with excellent media compatibility across a wide range of hazardous gas or dust environments, including applications in oil & gas, marine, chemicals, petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals and water treatment plants. The transmitters are available in pressure ranges from 0.1 to 700 bar in gauge, sealed gauge or absolute reference versions, with various mV, Voltage and Current output options.

The IWSL range of ATEX-certified submersible level transmitters are designed for continuous submersion in liquids such as water, fuel, oil and other chemicals. The transmitters use the latest piezoresistive media isolated silicon sensing technology and a stainless steel diaphragm, which provide excellent stability, repeatability and resolution in a wide range of hydrostatic level measurement applications in potentially hazardous gas or dust environments.

Also on the stand will be the IMTG range of gauging level transmitters, manufactured in the UK by Impress Sensors. The transmitters are designed for continuous submersion in liquids such as water, fuels and oils, but have been redesigned to better suit the applications and the range extended to include a new plastic (Delrin®) version and a digital RS485 Modbus version. Typical applications include small, 1-10m depth tanks or containers, where conventional mechanical level switches and sensors are not suitable because of reliability issues and a higher degree of level ‘control’ and measurement is required. Other applications include measurements of static tank level, container or chamber level, vehicle tank level, standby generator fuel monitoring equipment, and asset monitoring of intermediate bulk carriers.

An engineering polymer (DuPont™ Delrin®) version is available for use in corrosive media such as diesel, petrol and other aggressive chemicals. This is useful if the tanks have external earthing issues that would normally affect metal products – a common problem in remote telemetry sites with standby generators.

Modbus version

An RS485 ASCII version of the IMTG range (and other submersible transmitter ranges) will also be on the stand. These transmitters are supplied with a digital RS485 interface, which outputs the pressure and temperature values in serial ASCII format. The electronics incorporate a microprocessor-based amplifier, with level and temperature measurements made possible by RS485 serial communication. Impress provides a standard software package, which enables the user to interface via USB and read the values back. There is also a facility to data log via the software, which is useful for checking installation and behaviours of the application.

Pressure sensors with digital i2C interface

Visitors to the stand can also view a range of stainless steel pressure sensors with digital i2C interface. Unlike traditional industrial pressure sensors with analogue output signal, the DCT 532 series provides a digital i2C interface, making it suitable for a wide range of pressure measurement applications in OEM and machine building applications, including medical devices, pharmaceutical machines, food processing machines and other process engineering equipment.

The i2C interface provides complete integration flexibility, enabling localised bus configuration, which gives the user serial communications with the sensor. The synchronous master-slave interface enables communication between a master and up to 127 slave devices. As well as typical settings such as slave address and data format, units for pressure and other parameters can be set up.

For more information on Impress Sensors’ range of products, or for a sensor demonstration, please call in on the stand at the show, or call the sales department on 0118 981 7980. Alternatively, visit the website at www.impress-sensors.co.uk

OUR CUSTOMERS
We work with many businesses and organisations operating in fields as diverse as medical, metal processing, chemical, automotive, agriculture, pharmaceutical, textiles, water & waste water treatment, mining, pulp & paper processing, gas detection/monitoring manufacturers, petrochemical, utilities and university research.

APPLICATIONS
There are three main applications for our sensors:

Industrial Safety Electrochemical
Protection against high levels of toxic gases. Catalytic bead and infrared sensors are used to detect explosive gases, warning operators when it is unsafe to enter or if there is any risk of a change in environmental conditions.

Emissions
A range of sensors to measure toxic gas emissions and oxygen within gas flues. For domestic environments, you’ll find these sensors monitoring the combustion efficiency of heating systems. In industrial applications, emissions sensors are used to monitor the combustion process in boilers, burners, furnaces and for monitoring stack emission levels.

Medical
Used extensively in the healthcare sector. We have sensors that monitor oxygen in anaesthesia gas within ventilators and incubators, carbon monoxide levels in lung function tests and smoking cessation programmes and NO and NO2 in inhaled nitric oxide therapy.

NEW TECHNOLOGY
This year we will be showcasing the new long-life oxygen sensor now available from City Technology, which is designed to work in an analyser for five years – the entire life of an instrument – and therefore far outperforms its predecessors.

The 4/5OxLL oxygen sensor builds on the company’s extensive experience in the design and manufacture of toxic gas sensors. Based on field-proven toxic sensor design principles, the new 4OxLL is available in the industry-standard 4 Series housing and the 5OxLL in the 5 Series housing.

These sensors are based on electrochemical pump technology; they do not contain a consumable anode (lead) used in galvanic oxygen sensors, so helping to reduce field failures and improve performance over their lifetime.

Designed to measure oxygen in the range 0-30%, their compact size makes the sensors an ideal choice for portable instrumentation for use in industrial safety applications.

IMPROVED PERFORMANCE
An important enhancement for our customers is the fact the oxygen pump has been designed to be maintenance-free and stable for long periods. It uses technology from both the original oxygen and toxic gas CiTiceLs, which results in a direct response to volume concentration rather than partial pressure.

Another key feature of the design is the capillary diffusion barrier, which limits the access of gas to the sensing electrode. The electrode is therefore able to react to all target gas as it reaches its surface and still have electrochemical activity in reserve. This high activity reserve ensures each CiTiceL has a long life and excellent temperature stability. The 4/5OxLL is designed to work in a potentiostatic circuit with the reference electrode at a more positive potential than the sensing electrode.

BENEFITS
The benefits of the 4/5OxLL sensors include dramatically reducing field failures and unplanned downtime and a lower cost of ownership through reduced instrument maintenance and service. The environmental robustness of the sensor reduces false alarms through minimised environmental transient response with a reduced need for sensor replacement.

The precise monitoring of compounds/gases is becoming ever more important in today’s processing and manufacturing industries, and the steady miniaturisation of sensor technology makes this increasingly easy to integrate with other instrumentation and control systems.

Easily integrated pressure transmitters for OEMs with digital and ratiometric interfaces

Keller will be exhibiting the small size Series LD pressure transmitters, these tiny transmitters are setting new trends in OEM applications, as miniaturization is now becoming a reality. In our Series 4 LC…9 LC pressure transmitters, the special ASIC for signal processing is fitted directly next to the pressure sensor, in the same housing, under oil, and with the exclusion of air. This yields a host of advantages in terms of application: all the key pressure measurement components are now protected against the risks from humidity and condensation. The interior wiring is implemented with short, lightweight bonding wires, while sintered-in pressure-resistant glass lead-through feed the transmitter signals out. Together with the high-grade stainless steel housing, they form a Faraday cage around the measuring system, acting as feed-through capacitors. This makes the CiO technology absolutely RFI resistant up to field strengths of 250 V/m and for frequencies of up to 4 GHz.

Series 4 LC…9 LC pressure transmitters offers two output signals: a ratiometric analogue voltage output and a digital inter-integrated circuit interface (I2C). The ratiometric signal eliminates the need for an expensive voltage reference in the support electronics to the A/D converter, with no additional effort and expense for compensation and calibration. For a voltage supply of 5,0 V, the output signal is specified as 0,5 … 4,5 V.

For years, the I2C interface has been regarded as the serial standard in embedded systems. Up to 128 OEM transmitters in Series 4 LC…9 LC can be addressed successively by one I2C master in order to call up the current pressure and temperature values from the transmitters (slaves). With an I2C output, the pressure transmitters can operate with a voltage supply of only 2,7…3,6 VDC, and they are ready to supply the current measured values 5 ms after switching on. Appropriate ON/OFF operation and low power consumption make these transmitters ideally suited for mobile applications.
