How fixed gas detection solutions are supporting World Day for Safety and Health at Work

The International Labour Organization (ILO) has set out World Day for Safety and Health at Work for 28th April 2022. The spotlight on providing safe and healthy places to work has become more prominent in recent times, particularly as working practices emerged and evolved rapidly as part of the COVID-19 pandemic. World Day for Safety and Health at Work is designed as an initiative, aimed at encouraging people and businesses to leverage an effective occupational health and safety (OHS) system to reduce risk and improve working conditions for all. As a result, ILO is exploring the topic of participation and social dialogue in creating a positive safety and health culture.

ION Science is committed to protecting lives and preserving the environment with technologically advanced gas detection instrumentation.  As a leading OEM in the development, manufacture, and supply of PID (photoionisation detection) volatile organic compound (VOC) gas detectors. ION Science has been working to keep workers and environments safe for over 30 years. A key part of ION Science’s portfolio is fixed gas detectors, which can play a vital role in a organisation’s occupational health and safety approach.

In industrial facilities where hazardous substances are part of the daily routine, fixed gas detectors are used to protect employees, for site-safety (assets) and the environment. Their purpose is to control gas-related risks and provide continuous monitoring for the prevention of explosive gas leaks or overexposure to toxic gases. The right and reliable fixed gas detection system can prevent and limit the impact of a potential gas leak.

Fixed detectors can be classified and approved for use in ATEX-zoned hazardous areas or what are deemed safe areas. That choice will usually be based on a gas hazard survey and/or a DSEAR report depending on the site and application. Once a working area has been identified as hazardous it must be classified into a zone based upon the frequency and persistency of the potentially explosive atmosphere. This will help to determine the controls needed on potential sources of ignition that may be present in the area:

  • Zone 1hazardous areas are classified as a working area where the presence of explosive gas is likely to occur during normal working conditions.
  • Zone 2hazardous areas are classified as working areas in which explosive gas is not likely to occur during normal operation and if it does it would not be for an extended period of time.

ION Science’s two main fixed gas detectors are the Falco and Titan. The Falco fixed gas detector is available as either a pumped or diffusive model. The Falco is intrinsically safe and ATEX certified making it approved for use in ATEX-zoned hazardous areas. It does not require a hot work permit, and only requires annual maintenance. Falco gas detectors are designed with Typhoon technology, making it able to withstand exceptionally harsh environments, including 0-100% relative humidity and condensing humidity, and temperatures from -40 to +50 °C without any compromise in performance. When you have the right gas detection system in place, your workers and site stay safe, and work continues smoothly.

Titan is a benzene-specific fixed gas detector, making it ideal for use in petrochemical applications. Benzene poses a serious health risk, even at low concentrations, so monitoring is essential for safe working environments. ION Science’s Titan detector is the only continuous benzene-specific fixed gas detector on the market, offering end users a unique ability to monitor benzene concentrations 24/7 to ensure any risk can be mitigated. With fast and accurate monitoring down to 0.1 ppm, the Titan is designed with worker health and safety in mind, alongside reliable, accurate benzene monitoring. It is also certified to ATEX, IECEx, UL and CSA standards for total reliability.

This World Day for Safety and Health, it is important to understand the role that technology can play in improving approaches to health and safety. With greater awareness, improved initiatives, better prevention tactics and a willingness to leverage effective occupational health and safety, the likelihood of improving working conditions for all is possible. ION Science is proud to offer fixed gas detectors which can aid in the detection and prevention of exposure to harmful VOCs and play a part in supporting worker health and safety around the world.

VEGA ushers in a new era in level sensing with the radar sensor VEGAPULS6X

2390-08-11-21; Bernd Siebold;

With VEGAPULS 6X, VEGA radar “thinks” in a new way. The result: A new level radar sensor that can measure in virtually every conceivable application. The time when users had to choose their level instrument from a multitude of different types are now history.

Traditionally, the search for a suitable level sensor begins by thinking about things like: what solution would be best for my application, how can I ensure I choose the correct and most reliable device for a successful outcome for my project? Of course radar offers great answers for these questions.

The customer already knows their own process, the details of product properties and processing to be controlled, the temperature ranges involved, the standard needed to be met and installation fittings that are available. But, until now, choosing a radar-based level instrument was a laborious task, matching these process details to myriad radar frequencies, part numbers and options on offer. Now the process is being completely transformed by VEGA with its new VEGAPULS 6X.  One device for all and a new selection and ordering method that is customer-application focused. It enables complete, correct configuration and even pre-calibration of the specific sensor required – for any application, whether for liquids or bulk solids.

“Ultimately, it’s not the sensor that counts, but what the users can achieve with it in their individual processes,” says Florian Burgert, who, as a product manager, has been closely involved in product development from the very beginning. “Just knowing that they’ve chosen the best possible measurement solution and that they’ll reach their goal faster with it, makes a big difference in their everyday operations.”

Over 1 million instruments in use worldwide. The success story of today’s world market leader in radar level measurement began 30 years ago. In the meantime, VEGA’s sensors have optimized millions of industrial processes. The story includes milestones such as the world’s first two-wire radar instrument and the first 80-GHz radar sensor for liquids on the market, which revolutionised radar level sensor performance for customers. Behind this success are the many people who share a common passion: “At VEGA we don’t do a hundred different things, we concentrate on what we do best: Radar.”, says product manager Jürgen Skowaisa, speaking for all of them.

All-round protection

The new VEGAPULS 6X offers the best that is technically feasible today: a self-diagnosis system that immediately detects damage or interference, that ensures significantly high availability and safety, it also has new radar-chip technology, with expanded application possibilities and simpler operation.

The radar features SIL certification, and the matter of cybersecurity has also been fully taken into account: Compliance with security standard IEC 62443-4-2, which specifies the strictest requirements for secure communication and access control.

The value lies in making it easier for users to select their device and monitor their industrial processes. The ultimate purpose of VEGAPULS 6X is just that – through maximum simplification. It is one sensor that can handle virtually any application.

In the future, the customer will no longer have to worry about the technology, frequency or instrument version. Even setup and commissioning has been reduced to a minimum, requiring now just a few clicks and basic application parameters. In many cases, all application-specific settings can be made in VEGAPULS 6X before it leaves the factory, so it’s just left for the user to install, connect, done: It doesn’t get any simpler.

New Interface Software Gives Improved Functionality For Atrato Flowmeter

Titan Enterprises launches their advanced interface software for the Atrato® ultrasonic flowmeters. The Atrato line of patented ultrasonic inline flowmeters consists of four models operating over a flow range of 2ml per minute up to 20 litres per minute. The USB connection gives the Atrato computer interface capability, enabling the user to directly monitor the flow rate being measured and alter the operating parameters using a PC.

Titan’s development of the Atrato’s new interface software features four key functionality improvements:

  1. The ability to connect, configure and operate multiple Atrato flowmeters on a computer simultaneously whilst minimising CPU usage.
  2. Additional capability to run simple local and remote-control batching operations using an inbuilt relay.
  3. Remote start / restart capability for long shut-down periods.
  4. The ability to increase signal gain via the software for liquids with poor acoustic properties.

The Atrato interface software enables the user to log the flow data directly via the USB. This data-logging capability gives a continuous picture of the flow characteristics of the system being monitored, such as flow, alarms, relay and pulse. The upgrade integrates developments in both the Atrato’s internal software and the PC interface software, providing a combination of increased versatility and advanced operational features, giving a convenient platform for users to integrate into their processes or systems and supporting better diagnostic capability.

Neil Hannay, Senior R&D Engineer with Titan Enterprises, says: “We are continually pushing our product design and performance windows and we are confident these latest software improvements for our ultrasonic flowmeters will be welcomed by our customers.”The rugged, clean bore construction of Titan’s Atrato ultrasonic flowmeter makes it the perfect choice for a broad range of low liquid flow applications. Operating with excellent accuracy over wide flow ranges, the Atrato flowmeters are industry proven with good chemical compatibility, ideal for laboratory applications, cooling equipment, pharmaceutical, chemical and petrochemical processes, water and OEM high precision applications. With no moving parts, mechanical wear is virtually eliminated, critical for long-life and repeatability and reducing the requirement for recalibration.

Taking advantage of proprietary embedded signal processing software developed by Titan Enterprises, both viscous and non-viscous liquids can be routinely measured precisely. The low flows that the Atrato flowmeter is capable of measuring vary from laminar to turbulent and are highly immune from viscosity. With unparalleled turndown, repeatability, and linearity, the Atrato can monitor flow over a range of 250:1. Using the Atrato USB port, users can now directly connect their laptop PC to multiple flowmeters and monitor the rate and total flow while also being able to alter a selection of operating parameters.

The Atrato interface software is supplied with the flow meters and can also be downloaded from Titan’s website. Although the upgraded software is ‘backward compatible’ and will work with older Atrato models, not all the new features will be accessible.

Mecmesin VTG Tornado creates a storm

Mecmesin announced today the launch of its ground-breaking VTG digital torque tester, combining a highly responsive, capacitive 5” colour touchscreen with sophisticated torque measurement features driven by the power of Mecmesin’s Vector OS.

The VTG Tornado is packed full of innovative features, accessible via an intuitive touchscreen interface that sets it apart from other torque testers. It is easy to navigate, just swipe or press-and-hold to access menus, toolbars, and settings.

Vector OS is the technology platform at the heart of the VTG Tornado enabling operators to customise the touchscreen interface, configure the tester to their requirements and analyse test results quickly in the field.

Benefits of dual zone display

Representing a major step forward in portable torque testing, the VTG Tornado boasts an array of advanced capabilities. It includes a dual zone display with the upper zone clearly showing the peak readings in N.cm, lbf.in and other common units of measurement.

The lower zone provides a live graphical plot of the torque applied so that critical events can be easily identified. For example, when testing plastic closures the key parameters, such as the release torque, bridge-breaking of a TE band and strip torque, are all clearly shown. Alternatively, the lower zone can be allocated to a statistical overview, which calculates the Max, Min, Average and Standard Deviation from the peak readings captured and stored in the VTG’s memory.

A configurable first-peak function, coupled with the standard maximum reading, ensures that both the initial slip torque and the secondary break torque are captured. This is particularly valuable when measuring the performance of plastic and metal tamper-evident closures (e.g., ROPP), where a maximum reading alone is insufficient to determine both characteristics.

Individual results can be transmitted immediately via RS232 to a PC or printer for analysis. Additionally, an internal memory of over 500 peak results is also available for mass storage when batch testing. An external SD memory card captures all the individual data-points for each test in .csv format so that they can be exported to Excel and other software packages.

Built-in safeguards

The VTG Tornado also features a configurable alarm setting to alert an operator with red & green lights during testing when the torque reading falls within or outside the tolerance limit.

To avoid the risk of operators inadvertently changing units of measurement or the operating mode, there is a password-protected lock function. This is particularly useful when the instrument is being used over several shifts by operators of differing skill levels.

Equally at home in the laboratory or at the point of production, the compact and portable VTG Tornado features a tough, water-resistant casing (rated to IP54), fabricated in non-painted polypropylene, making it suitable for use in pharmaceutical environments.

Four models are available with capacities ranging from 1.5N.m for delicate assessments, to the 3N.m, 6N.m and 10N.m versions for increasingly robust applications.

A calibration certificate traceable to national standards is included at no extra charge – ensuring full compliance during external audits.

Ideal for use in a range of industries

Designed to meet the demands of testing from applications as diverse as the low-level torques associated with small rotary knobs and controls through to actuation torques of medical devices and release torques of packaging caps and closures, the VTG Tornado is the ultimate digital torque tester.

“Mecmesin has been manufacturing digital torque testers for over 30 years and the new VTG Tornado represents the perfect blend of performance and functionality combined with the very latest touch screen technology.”, said John Page, PPT Group Managing Director,” The VTG Tornado has clearly reset the bar in the industry and represents the best-in-class torque instrumentation on the market today.”

The VFG is constructed in a rugged aluminium housing, shaped to fit the hand and small enough to be comfortably used as a hand-held device. It is easily attachable to a motorised stand, thereby making it an affordable first step to more controlled tension and compression testing where optimum repeatability is required. Alternatively, this powerful digital force gauge can also be integrated as a key component into custom test rigs.

The VFG also acts as a universal display for a selection of external ‘smart’ force and torque transducers, just ‘plug-and-play’. This means users can expand a VFG by connecting additional sensors to perform tests of all capacities for tension, compression and torsion – all with one gauge.

It is powered by a fast-charge lithium-Ion battery and is supplied in a robust carry case with a standard accessory kit plus a USB-C charging/data cable and USB-C to -A adapter. A removable rubber bumper is pre-fitted to protect against accidental damage if the gauge is dropped.

A calibration certificate traceable to national standards is included at no extra charge – ensuring full compliance during external audits.

Designed for the most demanding tension and compression measurement applications across a wide range of industries, the VFG is the ultimate force gauge for assessing product and material quality.

“Mecmesin has been manufacturing digital force and torque gauges for over 30 years and the new VFG represents the perfect blend of performance and functionality combined with the very latest touch screen technology.”, said John Page, PPT Group Managing Director,” The VFG has clearly reset the bar in the industry and represent the best-in-class force and torque instrumentation on the market today.”
